'Tobago, a little, tranquil island 21 miles northeast of Trinidad and part of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago was connected to the South American mainland thousands of years ago. The island is an Eden that tourism has only just begun to touch ..... Reefs and rainforests, lagoons and waterfalls are home to some 210 species of bird and 123 different butterflies. There are some 30 reefs surrounding the island where all manner of fish and underwater flora abound.' (Culinaria the Caribbean Discovery, Parkinson R)

Trips and Outings
Up the coast road on the Atlantic side of the island at Richmond is the Richmond Great House, formerly a Plantation House, now a guest house, it is very beautiful, inside and out, and well worth a stop for a drink in the little bar on your way to Speyside.
There are several little restaurants at Castara, on the Caribbean side of the island where you can have a fresh chicken or fish lunch and drinks near the sea, very simple but enjoyable. At Englishman's Bay Eula at the food stall serves roti.
The Arnos Vale hotel near Plymouth serves afternoon tea at 4pm (expensive) and you can watch a good selection birds come to be fed. There are a lot of hummingbirds there and a hotel parrot. Snorkelling off the beach there is very good.
Peter Cox is a very good local naturalist and takes guided tours into the rain forest, for details his phone number is in our phone book. He gives a lecture on local wildlife every Tuesday at the Turtle Beach Hotel at 5pm, lives quite close by and will organize trips to suit you; his phone number is in our book, Lesleyann can contact him for you.
Sailing trips can be arranged with a large catamaran operating out of Pigeon Point, or a smaller sailing boat from Mount Irvine Bay. A motor boat makes day trips up the coast to take people snorkelling and fishing, and this has been highly recommended by guests. (contact numbers in our phone book) . Glass bottomed boats run out of Bucco to visit the reef for snorkelling which is very good there, or from Speyside to visit the Angel Reef. There are several diving schools on the island, the best ones are at the eastern end of the island next to the Blue Waters Inn, or at the Speyside Inn. Information available at Windy Edge.
Fishing trips leave from Store Bay, but some will pick up from the house.
A trip to the Argyle Waterfall is well worth doing. It is about 45 mins' drive up the road towards Speyside. You will see the sign to the waterfall just before you get to Roxborough. Leave your car in the carpark where you will find a government guide to escort you to the falls. Take swimming things as you can have a lovely swim in the pool under the waterfall.
