Tobago is surrounded by coastal beauty. On the north-eastern half of the island the rain forest meets the sea and sleepy villages nestle into the sides of wooded hills. The south-west end of the island is flatter and here the airport, the capital town of Scarborough and most of the island’s hotels and guest houses are situated, so life is livelier. Tobago’s bays and beaches are outstanding: the nearest to Ambassador's House is Little Bacolet Bay, about 8 minutes’ drive. With its own small beach bar run by the hotel on the cliff this is a great place for a morning swim and a snack lunch. Further east up the island on the same coastline (Atlantic) you will come to King’s Bay, a perfect horseshoe bay, the sea shelves gently here and the sound of parrots in the forest is all around you; further on you come to Speyside, where you can take a boatride to Little Tobago.

On the Northern, Caribbean coast you are spoilt for choice, with Castara Bay, Englishmans Bay, Parlatouvier and Charlotteville, and many more. Each has its own special charm, they are visited by few as they are far from the main tourist area of Pigeon Point and Store Bay in the south west of the island. But these too, or Mount Irvine and Turtle Beach a little further up the coast have their attractions, plenty of water sports, food stalls and fun to be had. The nearest is Little Bacolet about 8 mins.; down the road to the traffic lights, turn left along the Claude Noel Highway about a mile, take the road on the right signed to Bacolet, drive down there for about half a mile and opposite a large white house with blue and green shutters on your right you will see some steps down to a beautiful palm-fringed beach on your left. You can leave the car by the road. If you pass the Cotton House Batik shop you have gone just too far. There is a good new beach bar run by the nearby hotel on the cliff above the bay, called the Blue Haven. Stay on the Claude Noel Highway heading East 30 mins for Kings Bay, a beautiful secluded bay and Speyside (10 mins further on). Continue on the road over the hills across the top of the island and you come (down a very steep hill) to Charlotteville, a beautiful fishing village of little wooden houses sitting in the hills round a wide horseshoe bay. It is a good area for seeing parrots. The road has recently been made up all the way on to L’Anse Forni so you can now go all round the island and this is a wonderfully scenic drive. Allow a full day for this, as roads are windy and holey in Tobago. Petrol is usually available in both Roxborough and Charlotteville. To Bucco, Stonehaven, Mount Irvine ( beach bar) Bays and Turtle Beach (15-20 mins); turn right at the traffic lights at the bottom of the hill and go along the Claude Noel towards the airport, then take the right turn for Bucco and you will come to these beaches. One of guests’ favourite beaches is Castara Bay (about 20-30mins); turn left out of the drive, drive on through the village of Mason Hall (fruit and veg stall and small supermarket) and you will have a beautiful drive through tiny villages and come out on the Caribbean side of the island at Castara. Take the turn to Castara Beach, leave the car by the store and walk over the wooden bridge to the beach bar. There is a beautiful sandy beach, seats under the shade of coconut palms and usually not many other people about. For fishing trips, ask to speak to Owen. Tell him you are staying at Windy Edge. Watch out for the steel pan player who will want to take some dollars off you, this is not obligatory! This is a good place to buy fish from the fishermen when they bring in the catch in the afternoons. The next beach is Englishman’s bay, this is a fairly remote beach and there has been some crime here from time to time, so it is wise to be careful and not be there totally alone or at night. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. Craft stalls and local food stall. Keep going and you will come to Parlatuvier, a fishing village, some lovely bathing from a sandy beach, with a nice restaurant by the roadside, you can also buy fish here on the jetty. Local fish is very reasonable, usually around TT$12 per lb (about £1.10 per lb) The price may have gone up due to fuel price increases lately. Further on you will come to a junction, turn left here for Bloody Bay, like Englishmans very remote and then to L’Anse Fourni, the last village on the old road, beyond this is the new road to Charlotteville. A right turn at this junction will take you over the hills through the rain forest and then through a cocoa plantation to Roxborough; if you turn right again there you will get to Scarborough and back home. There are only two petrol stations in the northern part of the island, at Roxborough and Charlotteville, the others are in lower Scarborough, a new one on the main highway, Carnbee and near the airport. Tobago is only about 24 miles long and 12 miles wide so nothing is very far away.
